My friend had a deer skull from a long time ago, and I always meant to take a photo of it. I had the perfect opportunity when we experimented with Cyanotypes for a NAIT Photographic Technology assignment. We took a photograph on 4×5 negative with our old 4×5 cameras, then developed the negatives in paper developer instead of negative develpor. We then made contact prints of the negatives onto watercolour paper, using UV lights. The top photo is the cyanotype on watercolour paper. Below is the original negative that I used for the contact print.

Michelle stopped by for a quick photo shoot today. I had a NAIT assignment to replicate a famous photographer’s style, so I chose to replicate Joe McNally’s portraits on black backgrounds. They are characterized by a dramatic head and shoulders portrait, combined with a very cold rim light.

I really loved doing this assignment, it was a great excuse to look at other photographer’s photos and lighting techniques. One of the hardest things about photography is staying inspired. Right now I’m listening to the TEDTalks on Netflix Canada. I tried watching the photography/video one and was incredibly bored. Instead I’m really enjoying the series on beauty & fashion, and would highly recommended it for other photographers. Especially the video on fashion and copyright for fashion designers, and how the whole open-source mind set boosts creativity, and often times boost sales, too! A perfect compliment to an assignment like this NAIT one.

I would also love to post this lovely outtake, a photo of my mom who stepped in to help me set up my lights
