Michelle stopped by for a quick photo shoot today. I had a NAIT assignment to replicate a famous photographer’s style, so I chose to replicate Joe McNally’s portraits on black backgrounds. They are characterized by a dramatic head and shoulders portrait, combined with a very cold rim light.
I really loved doing this assignment, it was a great excuse to look at other photographer’s photos and lighting techniques. One of the hardest things about photography is staying inspired. Right now I’m listening to the TEDTalks on Netflix Canada. I tried watching the photography/video one and was incredibly bored. Instead I’m really enjoying the series on beauty & fashion, and would highly recommended it for other photographers. Especially the video on fashion and copyright for fashion designers, and how the whole open-source mind set boosts creativity, and often times boost sales, too! A perfect compliment to an assignment like this NAIT one.
I would also love to post this lovely outtake, a photo of my mom who stepped in to help me set up my lights![]()
