New NAIT Assignments

I’ve gotten a bit behind in updating my new assignments for school. Here is a quick preview of some of the new stuff I’ve been working on:

The cake image is a study in food photography for our commercial/industrial class. The next two images are for my Thesis project – they are both works in progress. The final image is just a random landscape shot I took for one of my Photoshop classes!

Shane Gibson Headshots

Recently a local Ukranian dance instructor, Shane Gibson, asked me to take some head shots. Here is a preview from the shoot! Shane was a blast to work with, and I’d love to take some photos of him or his students dancing.

As a totally random side note, I dabbled in Ukrainian dancing in my past. Check out the above slideshow for the evidence…

NAIT Assignments – Portrait & Commercial

I’ve had another really busy week at NAIT! This month I’ve had the opportunity to shoot two of my favorite assignments! Liquids and a low key portrait. How lucky am I?

For the liquid assignment I had to ensure that light was passing through the chosen liquid. I chose an neat bottle of perfume I had kicking around my house. CK’s N2U for her.

It was very fun to shoot! I shot this image on black plexiglass, with 4 lights:

A main beauty dish off to the left, a soft box overhead, a kicker back left, and finally a very subtle background light. About an inch above the perfume was a circular diffuser, to soften the light even more, ensuring that the liquid is mostly evenly lit.

To light the liquid I simply put some aluminum foil angled directly behind the bottle, catching the light from the softbox!

If you are looking to read up on lighting liquids, I highly recommend Light Science and Magic: An Introduction to Photographic Lighting. It has an entire chapter dedicated to liquids and glassware.

Today, my dear friend and workmate Lyss was coerced into modeling for my low key portrait. She is a beautiful girl and an avid collector of smoke related paraphernalia. She brought in an alluring hookah, which smelled of green apples, and blew some smoke for me to capture this image.

Kinga & Rafal

Last week was a big week for me. I had the opportunity through NAIT to job shadow a photographer for an entire week. I choose Kinga Dydra from Images by Frost, one of the best local wedding photographers in Edmonton.

Through Kinga I got a ton of information on running a photography business and shooting weddings and engagements. It has definitely inspired me to make my photography more marketable and to think about how to make money and market myself! I hope to do some more assisting for her, including next summer during wedding season.

I recently finished one of the books she recommended to me, called Rework. It’s an incredibly brief read that is very optimistic and inspiring for small business owners. I highly recommend it to anyone who is thinking about running a tiny business, like a one or two-man photography studio.

The pictures above are of the lovely Kinga and her husband Rafal. She gave me some great tips for posing couples and I created these images with her help and guidance.
