I am an honours student currently in my second year of Photographic Technology study at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

My specialty is capturing the world in a quirky, slightly off way. I shoot beauty and fashion, editorial and commercial work, and my absolute favorite past-time is retouching skin and photo manipulation in Photoshop.

Solitude Theme

I was given a theme of solitude/mystery to shoot, so I told my dear friend and model to grab a hat, trench coat, and a large knife and we’ll head out and do a shoot. Unfortunately he shot me down, concerned about the legality of carrying a knife in public. I guess it’s probably not legal to be around downtown at night, waving a knife around? So instead we grabbed an old suit case for a prop instead. In the end, we didn’t need anything to capture the mood.

I also hope it’s not illegal to share this amazing cat with you. My biggest worry is that my instagram will become overloaded with cat pictures. Is it a crime to love your pet? Is it a crime to spam everyone with photos of it 24/7? Okay, probably. I try to restrain myself as best as I can

Fine Art Experimental Portrait

One of my favorite classes at the NAIT Photographic Technology programme is Fine Art photography. Our first assignment was to remove ourselves as the photographer from a portrait. You could ask people to take a picture of themselves while they felt comfortable, tell them something silly and snap their shot when they didn’t expect it, etc. My “thing” is self portraits, so I decided to do an experimental self portrait in which I had a natural smile. Something that is extremely rare when reviewing my 200-something self portraits.

To do the experiment I simply set up a black background and a simple two-light set up on my couch, in front of the tv. I set my camera to take a picture ever 25 seconds, and watched SNL reruns until I got a natural cracking up, smiling like an idiot capture. I think I got about 600 photos from the couple-of-hours long session, of which about 30 were interesting looking expressions – not the bored t.v. stare.

Urban Coyotes

So one of my classes this semester is a group project to service a “major client” and take photos for whatever they need. My group teamed up with some predator specialists who took us on a tour of Strathcona County (Sherwood Park, Alberta)’s coyote frequently frequented pathways. And we happened to see a coyote!

Anyway, this was just a quick note of a cool moment. Off to day 2 of this year’s PPOC convention – saw Johnny Tran tonight, seeing Doug Box tomorrow, Bambi Cantrell on Sunday and Kristian Bogner on Monday. Busy week!
